The things we've learned about Mr Kennedy ...
Students end up in the headmaster’s office for a variety of reasons, but last week I had the rare opportunity to interview him in there, for a special Trinity edition of Desert Island Discs. I found out many fascinating, and often surprising, things about our new Headmaster.
He’s Scottish
Most students who have attended assembly recently would be surprised to hear that Mr Kennedy is Scottish; his voice is 500 miles from the thick accents of The Proclaimers. However, he grew up in Edinburgh, and often goes back to visit.
He’s a rugby player
Although he isn’t of the hulking proportions of many professionals, Mr Kennedy is an outstanding rugby player. He represented Cambridge in the annual Varsity match (against Oxford), playing in front of 66,000 people at Twickenham. These days he tackles more tricky meetings than people, but he still enjoys watching Scotland. Interestingly, when Scotland score a try “500 Miles” is played, which is partly why he chose it. He also thought that when Scotland met England in the Six Nations, they would have more success. I suppose that shows even Headmasters get things wrong.

His school is famous
Mr Kennedy attended the same school as Harry Potter, James Bond, and the British version of Captain America, somewhat unoriginally named Captain Britain. Well, to be precise, he went to Fettes College, in Edinburgh. The magnificent building is said to be the inspiration for Hogwarts, and after James Bond was expelled from Eton he went there. As for Captain Britain, he studied physics there. Mr Kennedy also studied physics. Coincidence – I think not!
He has a strong faith
Considering that he studied engineering at St John’s College, Cambridge, and he previously taught physics, you wouldn’t necessarily expect him to be religious. But, he says that faith is a very important part in his life, and this is reflected by song choices such as Handel’s Messiah, Bring Him Home and Magnificent. For him there’s a very powerful connection between music and faith, and he says that music can often express things that words can’t.
