New centre tests English skills of visa applicants

The head of business development at Croydon’s newly-founded Secure English Language Testing (SELT) centre has explained how immigrants are succeeding in learning vital English skills.
The new centre in East Croydon is one of only ten centres where Trinity College SELT exams can be taken: Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Peterborough, (London) Holborn, (London) Hammersmith and (London) Croydon.
Lisa Donald for Trinity College said that she has particularly enjoyed giving candidates news that they had passed their tests, which are vital to allow an applicant to gain “indefinite leave to remain” in the UK.

“It’s a high-stakes test for the candidate and to see a big, beaming smile and the stress relief is a privilege,” she said.
“I am very proud of the work we do and the benefit to us as a country, and also the vibrancy foreign nationals bring to our culture.”
The centre in Croydon is part of a new, tougher system of testing brought in by Theresa May when she was Home Secretary. Previously, Ms Donald said there were suspicions that some centres were giving misleading information and helping candidates to pass the English Language tests.
Mrs May created 20 new secure centres around the UK where visa applicants can take the SELT tests. Trinity College have ten of those centres.

“I feel it’s important because we are helping the home office to police our borders. If they cannot pass our tests this will affect their visa applications,” Ms Donald.
Most people will take the test if they want to stay in the UK permanently, and if you fail the test you can re-take it. They are speaking and listening tests, where the examiner brings out the contextual conversation that is needed for the grade they are taking.
Trinity College also have a contract with TFL where they test driver’s English language.
